How to Understand a Hikvision Product Code (Without the Headache!)

How to Understand a Hikvision Product Code (Without the Headache!)

If you’ve ever shopped for Hikvision CCTV cameras, you’ve probably come across model names like DS-2CD2387G2-LSU/SL and thought... what on earth does that mean?

Don’t worry—you’re not alone!

At BCE Direct, we speak this language daily, and in this post, we’ll explain how to quickly understand Hikvision product codes, so you can be more confident when choosing the right camera for your home or business.

Why the Codes Matter

Hikvision model numbers might look confusing at first, but they’re actually packed with useful information. They tell you:

What type of camera it is

What resolution you’ll get

Whether it has audio, night vision, smart features, and more

Understanding the basics can help you choose the right product without needing to be a CCTV expert.

Let’s Break Down an Example

Take this model: DS-2CD2387G2-LSU/SL

Here’s what it means in plain English:

📷 DS – Digital Surveillance

This is just a standard prefix on all Hikvision cameras. Nothing to worry about here.

🛠️ 2CD – Type of Camera

2 = It’s a camera (as opposed to a recorder).

CD = It’s an IP (network) camera.

These work over your home or business internet connection—great for remote viewing on your phone or tablet.

🌀 2387 – Style & Resolution

23 = Turret camera (also called an “eyeball” camera).

8 = 8 Megapixels (Ultra HD, or 4K resolution).

7 = Hardware version.

So, this is a modern 4K turret-style camera.

🧠 G2 – Smart Features

G2 means it has Hikvision’s second-generation smart motion detection, also known as AcuSense. It can tell the difference between people, vehicles, animals, and other movement—reducing false alarms.

🔊 -LSU – Extra Features

This bit tells you what extras the camera has:

L = White LED light (for colour video at night)

S = Built-in speaker

U = Built-in microphone

Perfect for two-way audio or just listening in for added security.

🚨 /SL – Alarm Functions

/SL = Siren and strobe light!
If an intruder is detected, this camera can flash and make a noise to deter them before they even get close.

In Simple Terms…

The DS-2CD2387G2-LSU/SL is a:

4K turret-style camera with smart detection, two-way audio, white light for full-colour night vision, and built-in siren/strobe alarm.

Pretty powerful, right?

Great – thanks for that. The trouble is, Hikvision seem to keep adding to/modifying their part codes, (in particular the suffixes), without any reference to what they mean in their website data sheet. If they clearly delineated what the product code suffixes meant at the top of their website data sheet there would be no problem. It’s not rocket science. For instance take the new G3 DS-2CD2687G3-LIZS2UY/SL
What on earth does the suffix LIZS2UY/SL mean there? Then there’s the RB suffix I’ve also seen… You won’t find any EASY guide in the Hikvision website data sheet…
When you take into account the fact that the related DS-2CD2687G3-LIZSY does not even have a built-in microphone, (which all serious cctv cameras should have IMHO and isn’t clear in this case), this Hikvision part number obfuscation gets very annoying and so unnecessary!
Kind regards,
